MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Nachos and popcorn go well with a big drink at the movie theater, but customers looking for something to sip on while they're watching the latest flix will soon have options on an alcoholic beverage menu at a new theater in Montgomery.

Tuesday, the City of Montgomery approved a liquor license for the Carmike Cinemas Imax Theater that's under construction on Chantilly Parkway in East Montgomery.

Carmike, a Columbus, Georgia based company, assured the city council it will have a designated worker to monitor alcohol sales and that alcohol will be sold at a separate counter.

"It's an extension of what's happening in today's environment," said Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange. "You know, the Capri Theater is a theater and it has a liquor license, so this is a natural. Chuck E. Cheese has done it. I have a high regard for Carmike. They're a great corporate citizen."

Strange added that the city and the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board will be watching.

Seven council members voted for the license while one, Jon Dow, voted against it. Councilman Arch Lee was absent and did not enter a vote.

Carmike announced its intention to build the new theater in January of 2013.
