Pascagoula church lists free house on Craigslist

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

If you're in the market for a cheap house, there's one in Jackson County with an irresistible price tag. A church in Pascagoula is giving away a house appraised at $120,000. It's free, but the house giveaway does come with one condition: You have to move it.

The 1,800 square foot house on Pascagoula Street was remodeled just two years ago.

"New carpet, flooring, kitchen area, laundry room," said Lead Pastor Eric Camp.

The house is owned by Oasis Church, which is right next door. So why would the church want to give away a perfectly good house?

"We're ready to get rid of it. We need the parking space, so we are ready."

Camp said removing the house would free up space for up to 50-additional parking spots for his growing congregation.

"The demolition of the house is going to cost about $10,000. So we kind of weighed the option of demolishing it, tearing it down, and just getting rid of it, or making it available for anybody that could afford to move it. So we opted on that. It'll save us money," said Camp.

On Tuesday afternoon, the church posted the house giveaway on Facebook, Twitter, and Craigslist. Not long after that, the posting went viral.

"That's where it exploded. We're a little over 50,000 hits on Craigslist, unbelievable. We never thought in a million years that it would have gotten that much response," said Camp. "We had a line around the house, people stopping by. Most of the calls and emails were, 'Is this for real? Are you serious? There's got to be a joke to this.'"

"I guess they see the big picture of it's a free house and how much equity they would put into a house and it's affordable.  You can't beat the price. The price is free. Free is always good," said Church Administrator Jessica Versiga.

It's free, but, you have to pay to move the structure off the church property. So the first person or group that shows up with a signed contract with a licensed house mover gets the deed to the house.

"With 50,000 people hitting on Craigslist, at least one's going to contract it right?" asked Versiga.

"Somebody can get a home for very cheap, and we're hoping they'll be blessed by it as well," said Camp. "We're pretty confident within the next couple of weeks, I would say the next day or two, we should have a concrete taker for the house."

The house was built in the 1970s. It has three bedrooms, two full baths, and a bonus room. The house was once used for church staff housing and has sat vacant for the last three months.

Anyone interested in the house can call Oasis Church at (228) 762-5639.
