MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Mayor Strange confirmed on Friday June 20, that he received written communication from Police Chief Kevin Murphy, regarding his future with the Montgomery Police Department, late Thursday afternoon.

The mayor wouldn't confirm what the letter said but called it a light at the end of the tunnel.

At a ceremony in Huntsville, in which Murphy was awarded with the Police Officer of the Year Award, he introduced himself as retired Police Chief, but the city has not officially confirmed this.

Kevin Murphy has been on administrative leave since June 3. Murphy's twin brother, Patrick Murphy, was found dead at his Pike Road home June 1 -- the day after he was arrested on a charge of felony leaving the scene of an accident. Patrick Murphy's death is under investigation.

Kevin Murphy has met with the mayor twice during his more than two week leave. The mayor's office was awaiting written communication from the chief concerning his future with the police department.

Last week, the mayor told WSFA 12 News that his office had received concerns about Murphy's leadership before the death of his brother.

"Prior to this tragedy there had been some specific situations that were brought to my attention. As I have said to Kevin that, in his time, we need to have a conversation, and once we have the conversation and make a determination as to the future for Kevin and the Montgomery Police Department, then we'll take action on the issues that are on the table right now," Strange said June 12.
