PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

Phenix City Manager Wallace Hunter says many ideas have gone from conception to fruition under the current council. Millions of dollars later, taxpayers can see their dollars at work.

"We've had all kinds of plans drawn up at one time or another with different agencies, but now we're seeing these things done," Hunter explains.

The Positively Phenix City campaign aims to inform, encourage and showcase the city's advances throughout the community. Kicked off just one month after the current city council took office, a host of ideas were drafted to increase tourism and revenue. And with more ideas came more demands.

Hunter adds "with the inclusion of Troy University and the Marriott Hotel and that particular Third Street Area -- the renovation of the shopping center, we knew we would need additional parking. The white water rafting's going there with all the visitation that the city would incur."

Breaking ground just this week, the two floor parking garage will hold more than 200 vehicles when it's finished. Its cost: a whopping $3.1 million, and the final building will boast the Positively Phenix City logo.

"So, it's something that was part of the vision of this movement -- this Positively Phenix City campaign and it's something we're glad to see has gotten started," Hunter tells News Leader 9.

The steel frame for the future Troy University campus has been erected and the Courtyard Marriott in front of the parking garage is on schedule to open in August. Combine those two things with a complete streetscape along 3rd Avenue and a brand new Phenix Plaza and Hunter says the city will have done more than show and prove for its residents.

Hunter boasts "I think it builds credibility, confidence and people can see that goals that were set are being realized now."

Hunter tells me since this council has taken office, Phenix City has seen more than 400 jobs including some of the new developments and brought in close to $90 million in revenue. A tentative completion date for the 3rd avenue redevelopment is March 2015.
