St. Jude parents still fighting to keep school open

Posted: Updated:

Parents of St. Jude Educational Institute students are still hoping the school will open this fall despite an announcement by the administration that the doors were closing for good at the end of the school year.

Karen Thomas would have been a 3rd generation graduate of St. Jude. The school has been a second home for this family. Her mom, Linda Thomas, is not letting it go without a fight.

"We needed to raise money to open up the school and get it started, so that's what we're working on right now," Linda Thomas said.

The goal is to raise $1 million.

"This is just not for me and my daughter, it is for the community.  St. Jude is a positive entity on the west side of Montgomery," Linda Thomas said.

WSFA 12 News has made several attempts and put in a number of calls with the administration of the city of St. Jude to get information about the school's future and if there really is hope that it could be reopened. No one has returned those calls since they announced the school was closing.

Linda Thomas has gotten the same response.

"Why the school is closing, why didn't you notify the parents in advance, why didn't you give us a chance to save the school," Linda Thomas said.

Thomas and her family will keep pressing for answers, but they're realistic about what the next school year holds for them.

"As most parents have already done, enrolled children into other schools," Linda Thomas said.

St. Jude parents, students and affiliates plan a rally to raise awareness and funds Saturday.

The rally was originally planned to be held in the Calhoun Foods parking lot on West Fairview Avenue. But it turns out, the Archdiocese also owns that shopping strip.

Calhoun Enterprises leases the building and was not granted approval to host the rally.

Instead, Freewill Baptist Church will host it from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
