OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -

A recent discovery inside an Opelika hardware store has Coca Cola executives in Atlanta very excited.

Dozier Smith T of Smith T Hardware and Building Supply was peeling away old plaster from the walls of his building when his work revealed a hidden treasure.

A gigantic red, white and black Coca Cola Sign believed to be more than 100 years old.

"Still trying to nail down a close estimate of the time, but this building was built in the 1920's, so probably around 1910 so, 110 years probably," said Smith T.

Smith T's grandfather started their hardware business in the 1920's, and he had no idea it was there because it had been covered up, hidden by a few inches of plaster

It's amazing that someone wanted it hidden, because we think it's the best thing that could happen to this store," Smith T said.

Directly underneath the Coca Cola scroll painted in bright green is a five cent sign, advertising the cost of a coke back in the early 1900's.

"If anyone was going to find this, glad it was the Smith's because they have been here forever, It's just awesome," said Ricky Dorris of the Dorris Sign Company.

Perfectly preserved for more than 100 years, Smith T believes the mural covers the entire wall. He's hoping to find the artist's signature in the bottom right corner when they uncover the rest of the sign in a few weeks.

"Our next job is to uncover the bottom half of the sign and see what's there," he said.

Smith T is inviting any Coke fans or historians to look at the gigantic sign here at his hardware store.
