Facebook gets proactive about your privacy

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

More of you are managing your online privacy in strict ways.  According to a Pew Research Center phone survey of US adults, almost 9 in 10 Internet users said they are taking active steps online to remove or mask their digital footprints.

Now you have some help.

Facebook announced it would do a privacy health check and send you a notice to remind you to update your privacy settings.

Our Cyber Expert, Theresa Payton, shares her thoughts below:

HOW IT WORKS:

1.  When a new account is created, Facebook will default to "friends only" - this started the end of May!

2.  Facebook said that as they rollout the new enhancements, some people when they post will see a blue cartoon dinosaur that has the message,

"We just wanted to make sure you're sharing with the right people."

3.  The new privacy health check service will provide the steps needed to set privacy settings for status updates

4.  The new feature will also remind you about any applications that have permission to use your Facebook data

It's not available yet but Facebook says it's all in the works!

The blue dinosaur already has some nicknames...

1.  Some tech writers are calling him "Zuckasaurus"

2.  The Wall Street Journal called him "Privosaurus Rex" and ...

3.  The New York Times said he looks like "short Barney" or maybe a "hipstersaurus"
