BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A Birmingham officer is continuing on his personal road to recovery after being hit while working a wreck on the interstate.

Officer Brandon Smith was hit on I-20/59 by a man who police have charged with driving drunk. It happened the same night Officer Keary Hollis was shot and killed just a short distance away.

Smith had volunteered to work the wreck and says he remembers speaking to victim's family members when the car suddenly hit him.

"Next thing you know, I remember being on the ground, a co-worker in my face wrapping gauze around my head. …" Smith said. "I'm not afraid. I want to get back out. It's fun. What I do helps people. It's a rewarding feeling when you assist someone."

84-year-old Tom Pole of Birmingham was arrested in the case and is charged with first degree assault. Police say Pole was driving drunk.
