MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
Authorities said a 15-year-old student was killed after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday morning.
The wreck happened around 5 a.m. on Danville Road just north of Danville Elementary School, according to the Morgan County Coroner.
Authorities said Austin Cook was reportedly on his way to football training when he was struck by a vehicle.
Cook's former principal, Kellie Tanner, said the community is in shock over the tragic loss. She said Austin always had football on his mind and shared his love of the game with her.
"He was a lovely young boy," said Tanner. "We enjoyed having him here. He had been in my office several times throughout the year. Every time we would have a conversation, football always came up. Every conversation we had ended with him talking about his love of football. That was one thing he looked forward to and he enjoyed here at this school."
Cook was an incoming freshman. Tanner said the Morgan County school system will reach out to students who need help dealing with Austin's loss.
"We are working with our central office on a plan. We're working with the high school administration and the counselor at the high school to make sure we get a plan for these students who are grieving, especially our football players, because they are a little closer to him in that type of relationship," said Tanner.
No charges have been filed against the driver of the vehicle involved. Authorities continue to investigate the wreck.
