BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham and the Hoover metro area rank sixth in the nation when it comes to pedestrian fatalities. UAB Psychologist Dr. David Schwebel has developed a life sized simulator to help teach children how to safely cross the street.

The simulator is currently at the YMCA Youth Center in downtown Birmingham. Kids from every YMCA will test their skills several different times throughout the summer in hopes of perfecting safe skills.

Dr. Schwebel says crossing a street is very challenging for young children because they have to judge speed, distance and timing. He likens the skill to learning how to hit a baseball and says it takes a lot of practice.

The program is designed for kids between the ages of six and eight. The simulator has already been taken to Hemphill and Bluff Park elementary schools.
