Streetcar countdown: 26 months until first ride

CINCINNATI (FOX19) -

In two years and two months Cincinnati's Streetcar is scheduled to carry its first passengers.

Project leaders on Tuesday said the streetcar was on schedule and on budget during a meeting with city council members.

Construction of the $150 million project is set to be finished in the Spring of 2016, costing 3.8 million to run in the first year.

"It remains to be seen how much money we really are going to need out of that 3.8. We've still got two years to sort this out," Project Executive John Deatrick told council.

The city is expected to use tax dollars to fund the majority of the first year expenses. The streetcar is projected to fund itself with ride fares, sponsorship, and special tax districts after the inaugural year.

Streetcar deadlines to note:

  • September – December 2015: Streetcar vehicles are expected to be delivered
  • April 2016: All civil construction will be completed
  • September 2016: Start of passenger service

Paul Grether, METRO manager of Rail Services, said there will be no new costs to the streetcar's first year of operations pending all deadlines are met.

FOX19's Jody Barr contributed to this story.
