Sheriff: Man pulls gun on Pike Co. deputy searching for missing woman

The Pike County Sheriff's office has arrested a man who is alleged to have pulled a gun on an investigator who was looking into a report of a missing woman.

Sheriff Russell Thomas says Bill Donaldson was taken into custody and will face numerous charges after he says the man pulled the weapon on the officer.

The incident began around 3 p.m. when investigators went to the residence, located on County Road 3310 off U.S. Hwy. 231 between Troy and Brundidge, on a call to investigate a missing person case. 

Once deputies arrived, they noticed a door that was open and then shut on a shed. A deputy walked up to the door, opened it, and Donaldson pulled a 9mm handgun.

"A sick feeling," the sheriff said of the situation. "We are very blessed he [the deputy] was not shot or killed."

The deputy was able to talk Donaldson into putting down the weapon, the sheriff said, though he also had a 22 calibur handgun in his pocket.

When the suspect and the officer got outside, Donaldson, whom the sheriff says is "familiar" with the department, fled the scene.

Department of Corrections K-9 officers from Ventress Correctional Facility were brought in to help find the man and successfully flushed him out of hiding.

The sheriff says Donaldson wasn't taken by surprise when his officers arrived on the property. He'd set up hidden security cameras so he could tell who and what was coming to the door. A search of the shed yielded at least five guns and ingredients to make meth.

The missing woman was located in Barbour County.

The investigation is ongoing.
