Troy Veterans Center served with cease and desist order

Posted: Updated:
TROY, AL (WSFA) -

The Troy Veterans Center has been issued a cease and desist order by the Alabama State Fire Marshals office.

According to Steve Holmes, the order was issued due to non-compliance of a fire code issue. A fire watch has also been issued until the violations are corrected.

Holmes stated that the Department of Human Resources ordered for the facility to be evacuated, and that they Troy Fire Department assisted in the evacuation.

Barry Spears, the public relations officer for the Department of Human Resources, stated that they received an order from the State Fire Marshals office which ordered the facility to stop using the building.

Spears also told WSFA 12 News that the order stated that DHR, in consultation with the Social Service Agency having authority over persons currently residing in the facility, was to immediately begin making arrangements for transfer of the residents out of the facility to other appropriate placements.

Spears also stated that DHR is charged with protecting adults from abuse and neglect and that is why they became involved.

The Troy Veterans Center is an unlicensed residential facility for the elderly and has no affiliation with the VA.

We currently have a reporter in Troy and will update the story when more information is made available.
