College of Mount St. Joseph becomes University

The College of Mount St. Joseph will soon become Mount St. Joseph University.

The college's board of trustees's announced the change in designation last October and now the "Coming Soon" sign is being taken down.

School officials expect the university status will help them recruit more students, retain faculty and increase fundraising.

The change also means the school can increase its number of graduate programs for master's and doctorate degrees as well as strengthen its implementation of online programs.

The school will also be able to apply for different financial options.

The official designation change will take place during a ceremony Tuesday, July 1 at 11 a.m. in the Fifth Third Bank Hall in Seton Center. It will be followed by a monument unveiling (weather permitting) with the Mount's official new name.

"This day is a significant event for us as a university," said Mount St. Joseph President Tony Aretz, Ph.D. "We have been educating students at a university level for several years by offering graduate programs and now online endorsement and degree options. We have launched innovative programs like our Talent Opportunity Program (TOP) which gives students our promise that we're going to be right there with them as they look for their first professional job."

Ken Stecher, chairman of the board of trustees, added that this change will allow students to get more professional experience while in college.

"Our students are taking advantage of the Mount's strong relationship with the business community and getting valuable cooperative education experience," said Stecher. "That's on top of an education with personal attention by faculty who are experts in their own fields. That personal attention won't change as the Mount becomes a university."

Mount St. Joseph University is an undergraduate and graduate Catholic university that provides an interdisciplinary liberal arts and professional curriculum emphasizing values, service and social responsibility.
