Coroner identifies teenager killed in Green Twp shooting

FOX19. FOX19.
GREEN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

The Hamilton County Coroner's Office identified the teenager shot and killed Monday in Green Township as 13-year-old Hawken Hemmerle.

Friends of the family say the boy was shot while him and another 13-year-old boy were playing with a stolen handgun. They say the other boy accidentally fired the weapon, hitting Hemmerle.

Responding officers found the boy with a gunshot wound to the head around 2 p.m. inside the home in the 5500 block of Marie Avenue.

In the 911 call, a woman is heard giving Hemmerle CPR as she is waiting for emergency crews to arrive.

Police said other boy stole the handgun from the grandfather's apartment of another friend in the 6600 block of Hearne Road in Green Township and brought it to the victim's house. He was charged with reckless homicide and theft. Both are third degree felonies.

Authorities said it is unclear if the boys knew the handgun was loaded.

The suspect appeared in Hamilton County Juvenile Court Tuesday. Because of his age (13), FOX19 is choosing not to release his name or show his face. His attorney asked the judge to put the boy on house arrest instead of keeping him in the detention center.

"Give him the opportunity to go home and be in his environment to not only grieve and not only be with his family but to also go through the pendency of this case without the further developmental distress that will occur if he has to remain here," his attorney said.

Prosecutors argued because of the seriousness of the allegations against him, the boy should be held. The judge agreed.

"With all due respect, your request to have him released is denied. He will he held pending the next court date," the judge said.

The suspect will be back in court July 9 for a pre-trial hearing.
