BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

This week's high temperatures are putting residents' AC units and repairmen to the test.

Brandon Ray with Herring Heating and Air has been working overtime on service calls. People are running their units so much they are breaking down.

"Sometimes it's a typical part failure," said Ray. "Service calls really picked up probably about two months ago."

Ray talked with FOX6 News about how to keep your house nice and cool this summer without going broke. He starts with the thermostat.

"We've actually got newer thermostats out now that you can actually set programs on," said Ray. "So when you're not there you don't want that unit running, it's costing you money. Normally if you're not home set it to 78 degrees. Comfort level is a key player with that."

He also says you'll save money by making sure you change your filter regularly. A dirty filter makes your unit work harder.

Lastly, he says make sure your home is properly insulated.

"If you're up there in the attic getting boxes or whatever, take a look at your insulation. If you can see your floor joists up there then that's a tell-tale sign you need some more in there," Ray said.

Another tip from Ray is to be careful when cutting the grass near your A/C unit.

"When you cut the grass, the outdoor coils can really suck all that grass in and it becomes clogged. Pay attention to when you're cutting grass. Try to veer it away from the unit itself," said Ray.
