Donation jar stolen from 12-year-old football player

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police are searching for a suspect they say stole a jar of change right out of a child's hands while he was trying to raise money for his football team.

Kaleb Glass was trying to raise money outside the G and M Food Mart on Detroit Avenue Tuesday when he was robbed.

"There were three guys," the 12-year-old said. "He told me to come over there and they all had money in their hand. He acted like he was going to put it in the jar and he took it out of my hands and ran."

Police have identified a juvenile suspect in the robbery. Evidence was found across the street from the store at a home on the 1500 block of Nebraska Avenue.

"We do have some leads on this case," Sgt. Joe Heffernan. "Our police K-9 was able to track the robber to a location."

The owner of G and M Food Mart, Lewis Babona, says the robbery will not keep him from letting the kids raise money outside his store. He says he's looking to do anything he can to help them.

"Doing the same thing that they were doing yesterday, today, and if they want more, they can come tomorrow and the day after that," Babona said. "I have no problem with that at all, as long as they're doing something good for themselves."

The S.T.A.R.S. Football League is aimed at keeping kids off the street, but the league's commissioners says it is struggling financially.

"It's hard to get donations and stuff, and support," said Dennis Connerton, the commissioner. "The store was supporting the kids over there. It's rough for these kids to be able to play."

Police say they expect to make an arrest in the case very soon.

If you'd like to help the S.T.A.R.S. League, contact Connerton at 567-322-2802.
