DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -

The Dothan Police Department reports that they are seeing an increase in credit card fraud in the area.

Credit card skimming is not anything new but in Dothan, police say they've received new reports of this type of credit card fraud on a weekly basis over the last few months.

"It is something you have to be leery of because of the growing increase, and because it is so rampant in the Wiregrass area and around the county," Corporal Devellus Butler said.

Credit card skimming is where someone takes a machine, or device, and records the information off your credit card. Police say there are key things you need to be aware of when you make a purchase.

"Whenever you go out to eat never let anyone out of your sight with your card," Butler said. "Always try to keep eye contact when you give up your card. Also be careful when you go to the gas station. Know to look for things like if something is sticking out or it has tape on it."

Police say one of the biggest ways that you can keep from becoming a victim is to use cash instead of credit. If you must use your card, be sure to monitor your transactions on a daily basis so that if your credit card is skimmed, you can report it immediately.

"Once a skimmer is used on your card, what they do is make as many purchases as quickly as possible," Butler said. "They have a certain time frame where they want to use your card as many times as they can, then they stop or then they sell your information online."

While it is hard to stop credit card skimming, Dothan Police say they are working to gain ground.

If you believe you are a victim of credit card skimming you need to contact your financial institution to file a report.
