TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Matthew Hartford, 28, appeared before a judge Saturday morning.  Hartford is accused of hitting a Toledo Police patrol car, injuring two officers.

Hartford is facing two felonious assault charges, with a bond set at $200,000 for each charge ($400,000 total).

U.S. Marshals arrested Hartford just before noon Thursday at a home in the 300 block of Oakdale Avenue in east Toledo.

Thursday around 5 a.m., Ohio State Highway Patrolmen says they clocked Hartford driving 70 miles per hour on Miami Street. A trooper attempted to pull Hartford over and that's when the pursuit began, according to authorities.

The trooper eventually terminated the chase when they determined it was too dangerous. A short time later, the SUV Hartford is believed to have been driving hit a TPD cruiser, which was on a routine patrol, near Greenwood and East Broadway.

The two officers were taken to the hospital.

Officer Todd Mikolajczyk and Officer Jeron Ellis, both 30, received serious injuries.

Officer Ellis was released from the hospital on Saturday. As of Saturday afternoon, Officer Mikolajczyk is listed in fair condition.

After hitting the TPD cruiser, witnesses say they saw the driver climb out of the SUV sun roof before fleeing on foot with a noticeable limp.

OSHP and TPD use different radio bands to communicate, so by the time OHSP got word to Toledo Police of the chase, the crash had already occurred.

"It happened so quickly, before we could get any information out, we realized [Hartford's vehicle] had already collided with our unit," said TPD Chief William Moton.
