A top award for one of Montgomery County's top investigators- the chief investigator for the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office has been named the best in Alabama.

Mike Thomas has worked on every major case that's come through the Montgomery County District Attorney's office for last 20 years, helping prosecutors prepare for some the area's most horrific crimes to go to court.

Thomas has a knack for tracking down witnesses and getting them to take the stand. He quickly gains the trust of key players in cases- skills that make all the difference in the courtroom.

The District Attorney's Office submitted a summary of his work done over the years to the Alabama District Attorneys Association and he was chosen as Investigator of the Year.

"It's a great honor to be named the best in the State of Alabama amongst all District Attorney investigators. Out of all the circuits we have in this state, I was voted the best of 2014. I'm humbled," he told WSFA.

"His work to our office is essential. He helps us get witnesses that are often difficult to locate. He works long hours, often goes out to crime scenes in the early hours of the morning and he is constantly working on cases to make sure that we have enough evidence to prosecute them in court and get successful convictions," added Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey.

Thomas says the prestigious award is a motivator.

"It encourages me to continue to work hard for the victims of Montgomery County to bring them closure to whatever crime has been committed against them. We're going to take care of victims and their families," he said.

Thomas has been with the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office for 22 years.
