KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -
As temperatures climb, more children are coming down with cases of hand-foot-and-mouth disease.
Children 6 years old and younger are primarily at risk for the disease, which tends to be more common in the summer and fall months.
Some parents see the initial bumps and think they are mosquito bites. The rash quickly spreads
The disease is a virus just like a cold. It is extremely contagious.
Fever, sore throat, mouth sores and skin rash are the common symptoms. The rash is raised spots and can look like blisters.
The virus usually lasts just a few days and leaves once the fever burns off.
Dr. Steven Lauer, a pediatrician at the University of Kansas Hospital, said the disease can be quite painful.
"The biggest thing is the pain that kids get if they get ulcers in their mouth," he said. "That can keep them from drinking. They can get dehydrated."
Doctors say adults are at risk.
Just like all virus, adults and children should practice good hygiene to avoid becoming infected.
