DALE CO., AL, (WSFA) - Authorities say the suspect wanted in connection to a rape and incest case in south Alabama was taken into custody Monday night, but the hunt ended with the death of a K-9 officer.
Tracker, a 5-year-old Beagle that was part of the K-9 unit of Ventress Correctional Facility, was killed while chasing the suspect, 50-year-old Skipperville resident Billy Wayne Lomaneck.
Lomaneck was successfully apprehended during a night pursuit in which Tracker ran him out of a field toward waiting Dale County Sheriff's deputies.
Investigators say Lomaneck and the deputies became involved in a shootout in which Tracker was killed.
Lomaneck was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.
ADOC spokeswoman Kristi Gates said the department, "is saddened by the loss of Tracker, but happy that his efforts, along with the K-9 officers, ultimately assisted in capturing the suspect and bringing him to justice."
The shooting is currently being investigated by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.
The Alabama Game and Fish and Alabama State Troopers assisted in the pursuit.
