MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The April 1865 Society unveiled the first of several planned historical markers, on Wednesday, commemorating the Battle of Selma.

The Society has plans for ten additional markers in the future, some of which can be seen by downtown walking tours and others must be reached by car.

"I'm learning a lot as we go, in terms of what happened years ago, in terms of the Civil War, and the Battle of Selma," said Mayor George Evans. "As we move towards the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, and as we also moved towards the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, I'm learning a lot about history."

The mayor added he knows firsthand that these markers can help people become more connected with the city's rich history.

April 2015 will mark the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Selma and the city's destruction by Union forces.
