(CNN) - Will the World Cup final become a holy war?

That may be the case among some Catholics as the home nations of the current pope and his predecessor go for glory.

Will they root for Argentina - the homeland of Pope Francis, who is known to be an ardent soccer fan?

Or will they back Germany, the native country of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, also a football fanatic?

And for that matter, whose prayers will be answered as faithful fans fall on bended knee before kickoff?

For his part, Pope Francis recently said he would not pray for an Argentine victory.

But an American Catholic who met with the pope this week told the Boston Globe the pope "absolutely wants Argentina to win.”
