MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Republican secretary of state candidate Reese McKinney has picked up an endorsement from the third-place finisher in the Republican primary, Crenshaw County Probate Judge Jim Perdue.

Perdue and several other Republican probate judges gathered on the state Capitol steps Thursday to support McKinney in his runoff election Tuesday against state Rep. John Merrill of Tuscaloosa. Perdue says McKinney had experience running elections when he was probate judge of Montgomery County and that's important because the secretary of the state is Alabama's chief election official.

A total of 22 Republican probate judges have endorsed McKinney. Autauga County Probate Judge Al Booth says he's supporting McKinney because the secretary of state's office is like a county probate office on steroids.

Merrill got 40 percent of the primary vote and McKinney 38 percent.
