MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Are you looking for something to do with the whole family this weekend? Look no further than the Archives and Museum of Alabama!!

This Saturday they are hosting two events, My History Day and the Second Saturday Themed Tours. Both of these events are free and family friendly.

Listed below are the details they provided for both events:

1)      My History Day: This is a free, family-friendly, event from 10 am – 3 pm on 7/12 at the Archives focusing on collecting, preserving, and sharing your family's history. Stations found throughout the building will offer fun activities, demonstrations, and information about genealogy, creating and preserving scrapbooks, personal records preservation, and conducting oral histories. Archives staff will be on-hand for "Ask an Expert" where visitors can ask specific questions about preserving and caring for their personal documents and family heirlooms. There will also be hands-on activities for young children and a museum gallery hunt. It should be a great event to get people thinking about their unique history and also to learn more about the resources that the Archives offers to the public. This is the first time we've had an event like this.

2)      Second Saturday Themed Tours: Our new, second Saturday themed tours will also debut on July 12th during My History Day. For the remainder of 2014, visitors can come at 1 pm on the Second Saturday of each month for a free, guided tour of our new exhibits by one of our expert staff members focusing on a different topic of Alabama history. The first tour on the 12th will be led by Museum Content Coordinator, John Hardin focusing on Alabama small towns. He will be using our 3 dioramas and museum displays to explore small town life throughout the centuries. The attached press release has the schedule for the remainder of the year. Lots of fascinating topics coming up!

In addition to the events listed for July 12, they have also started giving free public guided tours. These tours start at 1 p.m. on Monday through Saturday and will last all summer. On July 26 they are holding a genealogy workshop led by expert genealogist, Nancy Dupree.
