Lufkin Police Department low on manpower; looking to fill vacancies

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The Lufkin Police Department announced on Friday that they are looking for interested applicants to fill several vacant police officer positions.

The department is currently missing 15% of their commissioned workforce and because of that police officers have a much bigger workload.

"It's just harder and a little bit more strenuous, everybody has to pick up on workload," said Lufkin Police Officer, Kevin Jackson.

Lufkin Detective J.B. Smith, said they are having to pull other officers from different task forces to fill in for their vacancies.

"We have to dedicate manpower from one area to another. We have to move somebody from a specialized unit, say traffic investigation to patrol functions," Smith said.

However, Smith said that isn't stopping them from serving the citizens of Lufkin.

"It's not effecting our core function, which is patrol. So, when you call 911 you are going to get a patrol officer and we have those shifts filled," Smith said.

LPD has a total of 76 sworn police officer positions and 12 of those are currently vacant. The department has already hired seven officers, but they will be in training until October.

In the meantime, LPD still needs five more officers, which is why they are offering the Civil Service Police Exam to anyone who is interested.

"It is a general aptitude test; you don't have to have any knowledge of police prior to the test. It is good to have good math skills, good writing skills, reading comprehension,” said City of Lufkin Human Resource Director, Rodney Ivy.

While you don't have to have any police experience you do have to be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED.

Once you pass the Civil Service Police Exam you will have to go through an extensive background check.

After you pass the exam and the background check you will have to attend the police academy, which is paid for by the City of Lufkin.

The department is hoping by taking these steps some qualified citizens will step up and be ready to serve and protect their community.

To take the exam you must first register at Lufkin City Hall by 5:00 p.m. on August 13th, once you are registered you will then take the exam on August 20th at the Pitser Garrison Convention Center.
