MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Montgomery police say they are seeing an increase in breaking and entering, especially vehicles.

Officials say it primarily boils down to being a crime of opportunity and say the best way to avoid being a victim yourself is to keep the temptation away from the thieves.

Here's some other tips to make sure you don't fall victim:

Travel Tips

  • Utilize a roadside service prior to traveling.
  • Be sure to have a map or GPS device to assist with alternate routes.
  • Have an emergency car kit, proper tools needed to change a flat tire and consider a battery jump box.
  • Secure your valuables at all times. Remove GPS systems, purses, laptop bags, electronics and MP3 Players.
  • Use exits that are well-lit and well-traveled.
  • Be aware of Social Networking & GEO Tracking on your cell phone.
  • Be alert. Use caution when unknown subjects approach you.
  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Avoid flashing cash while you travel.
  • Look under and in your vehicle before entering it. Utilize your emergency panic button on your car's remote device if you feel uncomfortable.

Leaving your home for vacation

  • Place lights, televisions and radios on automatic timers.
  • Request a Vacation Home Check. Dial 311.
  • Have mail and newspaper delivery placed on hold.
  • Close blinds and curtains.
  • Set your alarm.
  • Place a lock on your fence and storage sheds and place valuable items under lock and key.
