TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Dozens of puppies and kittens made their first public appearances Sunday in hopes of finding permanent homes. The SPCA of East Texas has about 40 puppies up for adoption and that number will only continue to grow. As much as they need homes, not just anyone can walk away with one of the pups.

"It's really important for us to make sure that the family is a good fit for the dog and the dog is a good fit for the family," explains Luci Davis of the SPCA of East Texas.

Sunday, Shanda Long and Jeremy Morgan filled out an adoption application for the Aussie mix, Mason. Luckily, they're first in a stack of applications for consideration. Like anyone wants to adopt from the SPCA of East Texas, first a home visit is required.

"I hope that we can get him, but I'm glad that they are selective because you definitely don't want them to go into another home where they're just going to be abandoned again or not taken care of," says Long.

The SPCA says adoption events, like the one held Sunday, help spread the word that each animal adopted is a life saved.
"You don't only save the life of the animal that you adopt, but you also make space in our program for another animal," adds Davis.

"These are the animals that people neglect sometimes or don't look at because they're not a purebred. I'd rather rescue one," says Long.

Each rescued animal comes with a story. Like Bono whose mother was rescued on Easter Sunday after she was found pregnant and standing in the road with her companion who'd been hit by a car. Merrick, another Aussie mix who came from the same litter as Mason, was born to a mom who was found pregnant and abandoned on Highway 271. The SPCA hopes that through adoption, East Texans can help turn these puppies' stories into happy endings.

The SPCA of East Texas is also looking for fosters who will take in some of the pups until they're adopted. If you're interested in adopting through the SPCA of East Texas, stop by their office at 5318 Old Bullard Road on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. You can find adoption applications here.

William Huff terrorized Sierra Vista during the spring and summer of 1967. Despite a sentence of 40 years to life, the Arizona Board of Executive Clemency voted to release him from prison into home arrest. Family members of the victims are concerned for the safety of the community, as are new members of the Clemency Board. CBS 5 Investigates videotaped Huff riding a bike through his Tucson neighborhood. There are no restrictions placed on his proximity to children.
