CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

It's been one year since the City signed the contract for the new Cincinnati Streetcar Project and officials say work is on  time and on budget.

The project has been budgeted at $147.81 million for phase one, a 3.6 mile loop that will connect communities in the city's urban core.

It will travel from the Banks at Riverfront to just north of the Findlay Market in Over-the-Rhine. Some other popular stops will include Fountain Square, Aronoff Center, Horseshoe Casino, Washington Park and the Contemporary Arts Center.

The new public transportation system will be electric and run up to 18 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Cincinnati city officials hope the streetcars will help spur development and offer a new mode of transportation for residents who do not use the bus system.

Currently, streetcar construction can be found all over downtown and Over-the-Rhine. Workers are assembling the new  maintenance and operations facility at the corner of Race and Henry Streets and tracks have been installed along Central Parkway, Elm, Race and 12th Streets. Streetcar stops are also under construction.

The Streetcar system is expected to open for passenger travel in September 2016.
