AMITE, LA (WAFB) - Highway 51 has re-opened after an Amtrak train collided with a semi-truck Monday afternoon in Amite. It happened at the Diamond B Construction crossing on Highway 51 between Independence and Amite. The highway had been closed in both directions.

The train was traveling from Chicago to New Orleans. The crash happened at 1:30 p.m.

Officials with the Sheriff's Office say the preliminary investigation reveals the driver of the semi-truck "neglected to yield at the crossing." The Amtrak train struck the driver's side door and the driver was ejected from the truck. The semi-truck was hauling asphalt.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office reports that all 193 passengers on the Amtrak were not injured, but the driver of the semi-truck was taken to the hospital and is reportedly in stable condition.

Passengers on the Amtrak train were seen leaving with their luggage. They were boarded onto four charter busses provided by the Tangipahoa Parish Officer of Emergency Preparedness and will be taken to New Orleans.
