(WMC) - While riding from Canada to New Orleans and blogging the entire way, a cyclist was hit and killed by a tractor-trailer in North Mississippi.

His last stop: Memphis.

Iain Gerrard ended up staying at a hostel in Memphis on his first visit. He died on a journey; his friends say it was about finding himself and his love for southern music down the blues trail.

"The idea was that he was going to have other guests from Canada come and sign it, because he was just not happy that we didn't have enough Canadian things around," he said. "I'm going to miss him tremendously."

Pictures from the 23-year-old Canadian's time in Memphis are plastered all over his blog. The music lover saw Sun Studio, Graceland, posed for picture with the boys in blue, and ate Rendezvous ribs all of them.

"He found such joy and friends in Memphis," friend Sebastian Royce said.

Royce and other friends in Canada heard about the crash Monday on social media from almost 1,000 miles away. They kept up with his journey online.

"It was really him trying to, trying to find himself," said Royce.

Royce thinks Gerrard found much more than just himself on the road. He met plenty of friends at the Pilgrim House Hostel along the way to New Orleans.

"While he was here we spent pretty much every day as a part of the group," said Grubbs.

Investigators aren't sure what caused the bicyclist to veer into oncoming traffic on Highway 61 in DeSoto County. Gerrard's friends say they knew his journey would be a risky one, but they hope he found what he was searching for.

"It was a risk he embraced in search of exploration, knowledge and self discovery."
