Alex City mulls possible tax increase

Alex City residents could soon see a one percent tax increase. City council members held a meeting Tuesday night to discuss the possibility with residents.

The increase would raise tax revenues so more funding could be given to improving the city's roads.

City leaders say the increase would raise around $2.3 million over a 12 year span.

"You know, they're one of the first impressions people get when they come in..." says City Council President Jim Spann. "What kind of road are they riding on? Is it bumpy? Are there potholes in it? Is it gonna throw you out of your car?"

Spann, who thinks the increase is worth every penny, chalks it up to a safety issue and an aesthetic issue. "It's how do you think about your town?"

A second town hall meeting on the proposed increase is set for Thursday, July 24 at the Cooper Community Center.
