TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

The Alabama Fire College in Tuscaloosa is undergoing its first expansion since in opened back in 1998 and board members held a groundbreaking ceremony for its newest addition on Wednesday.

Construction has already started on a 19,000 square foot building for fire training vehicles, classrooms and more storage space. They are also renovating one area to become a 320 seat auditorium.

More space is needed because they are training more firefighters now than ever before.

"We're seeing an increase, a substantial increase, much of that is on our main campus in Tuscaloosa. We also have training at 19 training centers in Alabama," said Allan Rice.

The $2.4 million project should be finished in February or March of 2015.
