CHILTON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

A Chilton County couple is arrested after authorities say they had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and also supplied her alcohol.

David and Rebecca Hubbard are each charged with a school employee having sexual contact with a student under the age of 19 and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

David Hubbard is a former Chilton County Sheriff's deputy. David and his wife, Rebecca, are both Chilton County School employees.

An accident that killed an Alabaster man started the investigation. Three cars crashed on Highway 145 near Jefferson State Community College in Clanton.

While investigators were trying to find out if alcohol was involved in the wreck, they learned that David and Rebecca Hubbard gave alcohol to a 17-year-old girl the day before the wreck.

Further investigation revealed the couple had an illegal relationship with her.

"As the investigation continued, evidence of an inappropriate and illegal relationship between a student and both David and Rebecca Hubbard was disclosed," Chief Deputy District Attorney CJ Robinson said in a release.

At the time of the alleged relationship, David Hubbard was working for the Chilton County Sheriff's Department and the Chilton County Board of Education.

David Hubbard taught a class at the LeCroy Career Technical Center for students with an interest in law enforcement or becoming a firefighter, and resigned from the sheriff's department on June 1 to pursue a full-time job at the technical center.

Robinson said David Hubbard had also previously worked as a school resource officer for Chilton County.

Rebecca Hubbard was employed by the Chilton County Board of Education as a substitute teacher at the time of the alleged relationship with the student, Robinson said.

Robinson says David Hubbard has resigned from his position at LeCroy Career Technical Center. He says Rebecca Hubbard likely won't return as a substitute.

Robinson says Judge Rhonda Hardesty will hear the case. He says the delinquency charge will be handled in juvenile court and the sexual contact charge will be handled in district court, but at this time there is a gag order in place to protect the juvenile.

"There are no winners here, but I am proud of the diligence and resolve of the investigation officers. They have worked tirelessly to uncover the truth," Robinson said.

"Under the current laws of Alabama, these are the most severe charges we can bring. Now the prosecution of the case begins," he added.

The Clanton Police Department, Chilton County Sheriff's Department and the District Attorney's Office investigated the case.
