DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -

Home ownership is one of the keys to obtaining the American dream. In the Wiregrass area, realtors are seeing some steady movement in residential home sales.

"We finally found a place that's best for us," said David Hunter. "We jumped on it and we got it."

The Hunters are one of the many families that are proof that home sales are on the rise in the Wiregrass. They just bought a home in Enterprise.

"Hopefully we'll close in the next 40 to 45 days," Hunter said.

There has been a 17% increase in home sales across the Wiregrass, a trend realtors in the area hope continues.

Stephanie Boykin is the President of the Wiregrass Board of realtors. The group handles home sales for Coffee, Geneva, and Dale counties.

Boykin says there are many factors that contributed to the increase in June which includes an improved economy, the start of school, military families moving in and out of Ft. Rucker and low interest rates.

"It's been a huge blessing for our area and for the buyers as well as the sellers getting their homes sold," Boykin said.

While this is a step in the right direction, Boykin along with others realize, even with June's increase, there is still no way to ignore the 11% decrease in comparison with last year. Demonstrating the day to day challenges associated with getting the housing market back on track.

"We have an over abundance of listings and we are trying to make all of our sellers happy," Boykin said. "At the same time, we are having to give them bad news to say 'we need to be very competitive with our pricing if we want the home sold in a short amount of time.'" Boykin said.

So as the Hunters prepare to enjoy their new home, realtors across the Wiregrass hope the momentum continues to help make other families around the Wiregrass homeowners.
