Charlie and Cindy McIlvain are celebrating a big event in tiny Cragford, Alabama.  They came all the way from Kentucky.

"We drove 549 miles," McIlvain said.  "It's our 45th anniversary."  What better way to celebrate your marriage than a good old fashioned gold hunt at the Alabama Gold Camp. It's located in the tiny town of Cragford, just outside of Lineville.

"Most people come out here the newbies and we give them a panning demonstration to help the find gold," said

"It's the Piedmont uplift," Brooks said.  "It goes from the Carolinas in to Georgia and that's why they have gold there.  We were lucky enough to catch the tail end of it."

There are plenty of different ways to find the gold.  The rookies use a simple pan.  There's a machine called a high banker that separates the rocks for potentially good stuff.  And for the folks who are real serious, you can get in the water with a dredge and suck out material to look over.   And the folks at the camp it easy.   They dig a bunch of material out of pits and leave it for folks to dig through.

Gold hunters agree they're not here to make millions, it's more about the thrill of the hunt.

"To see a piece of gold that only you have touched since God made it, is exciting," said McIlvain.

The camp is just outside the city of Lineville.  It's about a 2 hour drive from Montgomery.  And they have all the equipment up there to rent unless you have your own.
