Sorrento Town Council calls special meeting to discuss ordinance on police department vote

SORRELL, LA (WAFB) - The fate of the police department in the town of Sorrento could soon be decided.

The town council has called a special meeting Tuesday to review to a proposed ordinance. The plan calls for voters to decide whether or not to do away with the police department.

Leaders will also discuss amending the budget.

The Sorrento Police Department has been shut down for months. The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office has been patrolling the area.

The town was unable to secure insurance for the police department after November. All five police officers resigned and only Police Chief Earl Theriot remained.

However, Theriot was later investigated by the FBI after allegations surfaced of inappropriate sexual conduct involving a woman he had arrested. Theriot ultimately pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents.

Gov. Bobby Jindal then paved the way for the people to decide the fate of the department through an election. Sorrento has until July 23 to work up the language of the issue to have it placed on the November ballot.
