MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Montgomery Police Department announced a new plan to crack down on crime Tuesday. The announcement came after MPD made arrests in two weekend homicides.

Quintrell Martin was arrested for the murder of Kendrick Martin, who was shot multiple times on Colfax Drive Sunday. Lamarian Hood and Arsenio Hall of Montgomery are charged in Tario Mushat's murder on Bragg Street Sunday.

"There was some illegal activity that preceded these crimes here. So if we start dealing with those illegal activities, then we may can prevent some crimes," Interim Police Chief John Brown said.

Chief Brown announced a new initiative that MPD hopes will prevent these violent crimes. They're calling it "Operation Domino."

The idea is to catch and stop smaller crimes before they lead to more violent crimes.

Officers will be targeting the entire city with a zero tolerance policy. There's also a youth initiative component to Operation Domino.

Brown says it's typical to see violent crime spike with the temperature outside. This summer is no exception.

From January to June 19, MPD worked 10 homicide cases. But since June 20, they've worked another seven for a total of 17 homicides so far this year.

Last year at this time, MPD had worked 30 homicides.
