Opp, AL (WSFA) -

A former Opp Police Chief was honored on Tuesday in Covington County as the department named its firing range in memory of the former chief.

Johnny Ray Metcalf spent 27 years with the Opp Police Department, 13 of those he served as Police Chief.

By all accounts, he was respected by his officers and the community he served.

Metcalf's widow had the honor of unveiling the Johnny Ray Metcalf Memorial Police Range.

Current Opp Police Chief Mike McDonald said Metcalf was instrumental in constructing the range.

"He was physically involved in a great deal of the work that always took place at the range," Chief Mike McDonald said. "Couple that with what he did as chief of police, and his being a friend to each and every officer and being a friend to the people that resided in the city of opp we thought it was appropriate."

The range isn't solely used by the Opp PD, other agencies also use it.

It's more than a firing range. The range is a place where officers come together to build relationships. Metcalf's widow, Pauline, said her husband loved to cook here.

"He loved coming out here cooking and fellow shipping with the guys and that was his whole main purpose getting them together so they could learn to get along together," Said Pauline.

Pauline Metcalf said her husband was a loving and caring person, and a great father and grandfather.

Johnny Metcalf died in 2010.
