DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -

Residents in Dothan will soon have one less option to get to the hospital if they find themselves in an emergency.

Wednesday, Care Ambulance confirmed it is closing its doors an leaving the Dothan area. It's final day in service for the Circle City is August 8. When care ambulance in Dothan closes its doors in just a couple of weeks Pilcher's Ambulance will be the only Emergency medical service provider in the area.

Care Ambulance CEO Charles Maymon says the decision was made because he says the city is only big enough for one ambulance company.

Since 1965 Pilchers ambulance has served The city of Dothan. For more than 25 years before care ambulance came to Dothan in the mid 90's, Pilcher's was the only ambulance service. Presently they respond to between 35 to 40 calls per day and with the exit of care they do expect that number to increase.

Joey Pilcher, Owner of Pilcher's, says they are ready to continue serving Dothan the same way they have for years. "We do not see any problem at all for the citizens of Dothan, we've never missed an ambulance run and we don't plan on missing one now."

Care currently employees 30 people, but Maymon says he's working to move them to other locations or help them find other employment.

City officials have been notified, according to Maymon, and company officials will be at the city commission meeting on August 5 to finalize an exit from its contract.
