The underwater exploration vessel Nautilus is giving us a new look at history. Despite being nearly a mile deep in the Gulf of Mexico, the vessel's technology shows photos as clear as day of a sunken passenger ship.

Dr. Robert Ballard and the Corps of Exploration are using the Nautilus to document the Robert E. Lee, an American ship sunk by U-166, a German U-boat, during World War II.

Ballard and his crew are using tethered, remotely piloted, mini-submarines to accomplish their task of photographing, videoing and mapping sunken ships for an upcoming National Geographic documentary that will air on PBS. The documentary deals with Operation Drumbeat, a Nazi initiative to attack Allied ships off of the coastal U.S. during WWII.

C&C Technologies Inc., a Lafayette-based company, also sent their own ROV to the U-166 location, as part of a federal study of the BP oil spill's impact on the wreckage and on marine life.

All of the information gathered by the exploration party is available to the public HERE.

A flood of lawsuits over LGBT rights is making its way through courts and that'll continue, no matter what the Supreme Court decides in the case of a baker who wouldn't create a wedding cake for a same-sex couple.
