INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION (RNN) – The intense battle between Israel and Hamas can be seen from space.
European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst took a photo of the fighting in the Middle East from aboard the International Space Station.
“My saddest photo yet,” Gerst tweeted. “From #ISS we can actually see explosions and rockets flying over #Gaza & #Israel.”
The tweet has gotten more than 30,000 retweets. Gerst also tweeted a similar photo in his native German with the same message.
But some are saying the astronaut is wrong for the cause of the bright lights in the photo. Blogger Morgan Carlston said that while he does not dispute the astronaut's "assertion that the rockets and explosions are visible form the ISS...they are certainly not visible in the image he shared."
Carlston says that this is how the area looks from space with just its city lights visible, not bombs and rockets.
More than 2,000 rockets have been fired into Israel from Gaza since July 8, according to the Associated Press.
