Federal judge suggests guillotine, firing squad be used for executions

The state said they didn't botch the execution of convicted murderer Joseph Wood, but they're not going to give anyone else the needle until they review his execution.

"Media reports, some of which were made prior to any information being released on day of execution, reached a premature and erroneous conclusion that this execution was botched," said the director of the Arizona Department of Corrections, Charles Ryan. He said they will investigate why Wood gasped for air for nearly two hours after getting a lethal injection. 

"The IV team, which includes a licensed medical doctor, verified multiple times during the procedure that the inmate was comatose and never in pain," Ryan said.

"I saw a man struggling to breath for an hour and 40 minutes," said one of Wood's attorneys, Dale Baich, who said out of the 10 injections he's witnessed, it's never taken this long for a prisoner to die. He's asking for an independent investigation.

Just before Wood's execution, the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals denied his motion that he has a right to know what's in the injection.
 
Chief Judge Alex Kozinski issued a dissenting opinion, calling the use of drugs a 'misguided effort to mask the brutality of executions by making them look serene and peaceful.'
 
He said using medicine meant to heal the body was doomed to fail, and we should revert back to more primitive methods like the guillotine, electric chair, gas chamber, and firing squads because they're more accurate and their sole purpose is to destroy.
