SANTA CLARA, CA (WIS) -

Marcus Lattimore fans will have to wait a little while longer before seeing the former South Carolina Gamecocks running back in action for the San Francisco 49ers.

According to the team website, Lattimore was placed on the active/physically unable to perform list on Thursday.

"The trainers, doctors evaluate and they make those decisions," San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh told 49ers.com. "As an organization, we do what's best for the member of the team, the youngster on the team, because, ultimately, that's in our best interests."

Harbaugh also said Lattimore's setback was due to "a combination" of hamstring issues and knee issues.

Lattimore was drafted by the 49ers in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Since then, the 49ers opted to redshirt the former Byrnes standout in his rookie season. However, Lattimore did make his practice debut in November and has been working to rehab his surgically repaired right knee.

The 49ers would place Lattimore on the active/non-football injury list in July in hopes that he would be ready for training camp.

Placing Lattimore on the active/PUP list during the preseason would allow him to sit out until the team's medical staff clears him for activities.
