BIRMINGHAM , AL (WAFF) - Jefferson County deputies responded to a house fire on Sunday morning around 2:30 a.m.

They found a 49-year-old woman with extensive burns to her head, arms, upper body and legs. She was taken to the hospital and admitted to a burn unit in serious condition.

The investigation revealed that the victim had been dating the suspect, 48-year-old Michael Kennedy of Mulga, for three years. She had ended the relationship about a month ago and Kennedy left in her 2000 Ford Expedition, according to the investigation.

Police said he returned to her residence on Sunday morning and the two got in an argument.

Kennedy allegedly poured gasoline on the victim and set her on fire. The fire also burned an area of carpeting in the house.

Neighbors were in shock that it happened.

"I'm just at a loss for words man, for real," one neighbor said. "Cause talking about it, I never thought nothing like that would happen so close. You see it all over the world on the news, but I never thought it would happen so close to me. She was a good person. You know what I'm saying? She didn't deserve it."

Kennedy allegedly fled the area in the victim's gold 2000 Ford Expedition before police arrived. The license plate number is 1B11H83.

He may be in the western area of Birmingham, but he does have ties to the Huntsville area.

Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies said the address on Kennedy's state issued I-D is a Huntsville address.

Kennedy faces charges of first degree domestic violence and attempted murder.

The vehicle belonging to the victim allegedly driven away by Kennedy was located. It was found Sunday night in unincorporated West Jefferson County on Tin Mill Road near Hueytown.

The suspect is still on the run.

The victim is still listed in serious condition in the ICU.

If you have any information or see Kennedy, call the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office at 205-325-1450.
