HOUSTON CO., AL (WSFA) -

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley has appointed Mr. Donald Valenza as Sheriff of Houston County, effective August 18. He will fill the vacancy of former Sheriff Andy Hughes.

The Houston County Republican Executive Committee agreed on a replacement for outgoing Sheriff Hughes Monday. Valenza will replace Hughes on the ballot for the general election in November.

"I just wanted to make sure our department goes in the positive direction, and I feel like I can do it," Valenza said. "I have been there through four sheriffs and I have watched what Sheriff Hughes has done. We are respected through the state of Alabama, and that is where I want to keep us. I will have to have help with my whole department."

There are no Democratic candidates running in the Houston County Sheriff's race, which is why the governor has appointed Valenza effective immediately.

Hughes announced his resignation in order to move to the state level to work for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
