MONTGOMERY, AL -

AUM mascot Curtiss the Warhawk was awarded Best Up and Coming Program for the second year in a row at the Universal Cheerleading Association's Collegiate Camp held at the University of Alabama on July 18-21.

The friendly bird of prey also shared a team building award with the University of Mississippi's Rebel the Bear and won Superior and Excellent ribbons. He was one of 20 mascots and 2,000 collegians to participate in the national event.

Curtiss arrived on the AUM campus on Feb. 2, 2012 – Groundhog Day – and students named him in honor of Montgomery's aviation history and the Curtiss P-40 aircraft from the World War II era. The Warhawk is known for his strength, courage, intelligence and vision. He is also a bit mischievous and flirtatious. When he's not cheering on the AUM Warhawks or attending classes,

Curtiss is active in the local community.

"I amvery proud of Curtiss and all of the progress he has made in his first three years of life," said Joel Hughes, AUM mascot coordinator. "The mascoting world is very unique and fun to be a part of and Curtiss is making his mark as one of the best up and coming mascots. We are very fortunate that our administration understands the importance of growing the Curtiss the Warhawk Mascot Program, as he is a huge point of pride within our Warhawk Nation."
