Maumee city employee resigns amid theft charges

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

An employee for the City of Maumee has resigned after being accused of stealing gas from the city.

David Theaker is now facing felony theft charges, but that's not all. He had been working as a supervisor with Maumee's Division of Natural Resources and he had been a member of the Maumee school board.  He has resigned from both positions after the recent charges.

Theaker has been charged with two counts of Theft in Office, which is a felony.  A police report states that Theaker is accused of stealing 167 gallons of gas worth nearly $600 between June 9 and July 22, and charging it to the City of Maumee.

"You hate to see this happen to anybody," said Maumee Superintendent Gregory Smith. "The board had accepted his resignation last night and they are putting a plan in place to move forward to get the school year ready to go."

The school board will have 30 days to fill the position.  Some residents took the resignation hard.

"Mr. Theaker has served Maumee in many capacities for a very long time and has done so honorably," said Dave Kissinger, a Maumee resident. "And this came as a great surprise to many residents here in Maumee, and one that has caused a lot of sadness."

Theaker is scheduled to be arraigned in Maumee Municipal Court on Friday, August 1 at 10 a.m.
