Owners set to make improvements to new Auburn Mall

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

Auburn's Village Mall was originally built in the 1970s and was a premier shopping destination.

However, in the past few years, stores have struggled to stay put and attendance is down.

"The food court is dead. There is just not enough energy in there, it's not happy," explains shopper Jesse Birt.

Hull Storey Gibson Companies purchased the mall in 2012 and announced Wednesday the plans for a complete overhaul of the property, including its name.

The Village Mall has officially become Auburn Mall.

"We are committed to the mall and we are committed to an investment here because we believe this property has so much potential," says Coles Doyle, Marketing Director for Hull Storey Gibson Companies.

Improvements will include new signage, a state of the art electronic reader board, and the installation of historical photographs and community murals inside of the Mall.

Hull Storey Gibson Companies is committed to bringing the Auburn Mall out of its rut, and is hoping to make these changes stick by recruiting top retailers.

"We have a very dedicated team here that work on leasing our space, work on building relationships with national retailers that have a record of success in enclosed malls. So we are bringing people to Auburn, showing off what a great retail location we have," explains Doyle.

Shoppers we spoke to were thrilled to hear the news and said these renovations will encourage them to frequently shop at Auburn Mall.

They also had some requests of their own.

"I would like to see more shoe stores for kids and more toy stores for kids," says Alissa Kamprad.

Construction is set to be complete in 2015.

Announcements for new anchor stores are set to be released soon.
